a Sailor has done. I decided to quit "tacking" back and forth and consider, instead, going straight ... going Power.
Going Power also made more sense for covering Mississippi and other Rivers, the ICW, Lake Ponchartrain, Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean.
First passage from Pensacola Florida to Houston Texas proved Power was it ! Outside in the Gulf or in the more interesting ICW, I fell in love with my first twin Diesel Motor yacht!
<*[[[[>< . . . <*[[[[>< . . . <*[[[[>< . . . <*[[[[>< . . .<*[[[[><
I already carried my 100 Ton Coast Guard Masters License ( 200 Ton soon ) So, always being a bit pragmatic I enrolled, and graduated from the Chapman Seamanship Institute for Marine Surveyors. # 111 ... I asked for another number, but ! The 7 week SAMS ( Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors) training gave me the engineering knowledge I lacked to search and find the Power Vessel that would serve me best, both functionally as well as practically. Then I started my search and luckily found a fantastic vessel. I named my new home 'BOUNTY HUNTER'
I do honestly believe, based on experience & survey knowledge: A Trawler Motor Yacht is the Best LiveAboard Vessel of All.
This is my Motor Yacht
'BOUNTY HUNTER' . . . CAPT. LARRY 'BEVO' BEAVERS
. . . and so it began
Due to requests and the popularity of this little site, I have chosen to leave some stories in permanently as most readers are new and referred from other boaters, etc. More pictures will be at end ... simply scroll down. Thanx, Capt B.
Dry Tortugas, Crusing Texas to FLorida on trip "ONE" and many other trips will be highlighted soon. ... I am NUMB as I am still standing in that spring!
LIVE LIFE IN YOUR OWN WAY !"
I am Capt Larry 'Bevo' Beavers aboard my Motor Yacht, after being a Sailboater for 25+ years. As you read this I am somewhere in the Bahamas, Bermuda, Florida Coasts & Keys, Gulf of Mexico ... (Florida to Mexico), Virgin Islands, Atlantic Seaboard or Cuba! When you "Pick" a Boat Bigger is not always Better! Many people can afford a bigger boat than they can handle I Single-Hand, so this is the max for one person Size is NOT important unless you want to hire & have a Crew!
I mention this as FIRST question I am always asked is about "size." I have seen people buy boats too big for them to handle, and thus spoil their dream. My boat is over 30,000 lbs, with 3 Heavy Diesel engines below. Heavy winds, currents, etc. can increase problems 100 fold instantly. So charter first, study and then make your move wisely! I so urge you to "Do it Now! on your dreams. Especially if you are over 45 ! I may return to Land Life in another year or 5 years, I have no idea, but meanwhile I am happy being mobile when I desire. It is a good, solid, fun & respectable way to enjoy life & meet good people.
KILLER My only companion, thus far, ( Ladies, I'm looking ) is "Killer" ... the 17 pound cat pictured below "in the sink". Killer goes "everywhere" with me. Driving from Fort Lauderdale Florida to Seattle, Washington. Traveled in dingys, vans, cars, trucks, and thinks life with me is just normal. He is KNOWN and regognized by many people. Too many pets "disappear" at marinas. Some are stolen, some wander and are not there when the boat leaves. KILLER will NOT get off "our" boat, even if I am gone, unless I take him off. He amazes me with his intelligence and antics. Killer has been with me every day on "Bounty Hunter." That's our Bond!
He fetches, meows loudly at ducks, seagulls, alligators and dolphins, and talks to me so fine! I have always been a dog person, but on a boat a "cat" is so much easier. I got VERY LUCKY when I chose THIS Cat Killer is a great part of my life and has been 100% perfect on this boat. WATCH CATS ARE REAL ! He actually climbed on my back at 3 am, growled (THAT awakened me) and then I felt the boat move as someone had boarded me! BAD DEAL! Very Dangerous but Rare! Killer gave me time to grab a weapon, yell a warning & throw a shot in the air. Most Liveaboards have no hesitation to shoot a person boarding illegally! Maritime Law is Worldwide and Liberal The "lucky" trespassers went swimming and as I was at anchor in the boondocks I could not follow. They caught their dingy & psssht! THAT did make me create a flood light system controlled from 3 positions. I have an even Higher opinion about cats now. Have heard him "growl" once since and it IS surprising & impressive ! Seventeen pounds of Growl !
"KILLER" BEAVERS
CRUISING THE ST. JOHNS RIVER ... NOTICE TANNIC ACID WATER CALLED "COCA-COLA CRUISING" VERY CLEAN WATER, JUST BROWNED BY TANNIC ACID NATURALLY

MY SOJOURNS Trips - Experiences
N0 sleet and snow, You suntan during the day and eat Turkey that evening. Holidays are much like yours, except the Ft Lauderdale Christmas Boat Parade. I have participated on one of the boats, and I've enjoyed viewing all on land at the ICW Seeing 100+ beautiful boats steam by with their creative lights and sounds.
As usual, all TV networks are present for showing nationwide and I snared myself about a 4 second national exposure. No offers from Hollywood or letters from friends ... as no one saw me, including me as I had to play tape back twice to spot myself ... but I DID look good!
Christmas Day SWIM in the morning, Breakfast by the ICW (Intracoastal Waterway), watching boaters tie-up at Marina ... Great Entertainment ! Late Lunch with friends at Shooters, watching silly Frenchy Hubby & Wife yell (performing) at each other on their 60 foot plus Broward. Sorry France, but you guys are Rude, Crude and so Socially unacceptable! You cause trouble wherever you go & never happy! Showered and dressed ( shorts, shirt, and shoes! ) then had Christmas Dinner with other couples and friends at the Marina. So good .... Friends and Food.
Especially my friends Bev & Gord. The Houstons, met on a dock and now lifetime friends ... I consider them 100% family. They have shared their Thanksgiving & Christmas Dinners with me for years, and I appreciate them so much!
New Years Eve
We shot off some out-dated sky-flares and all sounded off our whistles, bells, and even immense 5 stage air horns ... scared hell out of "Killer" cat, plus two drunks asleep in the bushes! They were last seen racing west with their grocery carts. I give food to some unfortunates and they either over-thank you or just nod. Humbles you when you see how so little can mean so much! Count your blessings ... and Happy New Year !!!! This was special as the fun involved my Brother David and my Nephew Stephen from windy Oklahoma City, where there are so many GOOD sailors as to surprise anyone. Those heavy winds make them ones too. Here is a list of what was done by our three-some in only 6 days! : (17th st Bridge South to Sunrise) SEE THE "LIGHT BAR" IN THE WALL AT NIGHT. THEN TAKE MY "BOUNTY HUNTER" FOR LOCAL BOAT TRIP OF COURSE THE BEAUTIFUL AND BUSY "NEW RIVER" and TO "SHOOTERS" FOR LUNCH. MIAMI ART DECO, PEACH ICE TEA on ART DECO DRIVE, MIAMI CRUISE SHIPS, MIAMI BEACH SIGHTS IN MIAMI IS SEEN ON TV.
THEN VAN, THEN CAR THEN ....... BROTHER DAVID, NEPHEW STEPHEN ... WE WILL REMEMBER ! they slept on plane home to OKLAHOMA CITY, while I collapsed into my boat for 2 days! If you have guests .... WEAR EVERYONE OUT !
FLORIDA
.... SUCH AN AMAZING PLACE ... I LIVE HERE AND I WILL NEVER HAVE ENOUGH YEARS TO SEE & DO ALL THE "MAJOR" THINGS, MUCHLESS . . . ALL THE LITTLE SURPRISES. Here are a FEW I have thus far enjoyed ....
Floating the ITCHETUCKNEE SPRINGS ... this was a VERY relaxing hoot. Only 500 people per day are allowed to float this primitive and pristine springs. In fact, you are not allowed to touch the bottom for it damages the flora and the fauna. White sand mixed with knarrled wood-looking rock and 4 ft long green broad leafs swaying in the 1+ knot current ... all spring water driven. Belly down on rented floats with your face in the water and a snorkel and mask on your face .... all you hear is your breathing and seeing is GREAT! Special Note with everyone head down in water ... funny sight & photo opportunity for all the butts in the air ! )
Water is 74 degrees, numbs you a bit ... but what the heck, I figure when I am that cool I am not aging at all !
Some pretty fish, saw no alligators, there are muskrat types, etc. but beauty and relaxation is key. Bright sun, then overhanging trees for shade, then gentle rain, ( feels so warm) then sun = ALL FUN! Worth it ... you bet ... Will I go again, maybe years from now as I am now moving my boat another 300 miles South & have NEW things to see & people to meet!
FLOATING IS ALWAYS FUN ... sounds Boring .... SO WRONG!
Find a spring where you are and JUMP in! Next month will probably be 300 miles south on the scenic "New River" in Fort Lauderdale. See Ya' ST JOHNS RIVER Jacksonville from the folks at HONTOON LANDING in Deland, Florida. They bend over backwards to Please you! This is not really a boat, but a GREAT RV on the water, a BIG motel room that floats. 52 feet of comfort .... level front to back, two bedrooms, decks fore and aft, plus a large Sun Deck on top via the spiral aluminum staircase. All the comforts of home, with a draft of only 2+ foot and one large outboard motor for propulsion. This shallow draft gave myself, my Daughter, and my Dad a chance to anchor anywhere, scoot right up on shore or once even nearly atop a HUGE alligators butt ! ( I MEAN HUGE! )
- flowing NORTH for over 200 miles from Central Florida, ( just north of Orlando) thru Jacksonville's Downtown into the Atlantic Ocean. The ST JOHNS RIVER is over A MILE WIDE in places ! Parts are as near a jungle trip akin the "African Queen" you can experience in North America.
THE SPRINGS are so pure you drink while you swim, open your eyes under water and have no sense of change in feeling .... in fact your eyes are refreshed without ANY burning ! No fish are at source of spring as no oxygen is present in the "boil." The fish appear 400 - 500 feet downstream - Oxygen Happens! DROWN? No way to sink, you must dog-paddle to stay in one place as the flow can exceed 100 million gallons per day from just ONE spring Eagles with their new young sit atop tall ancient cypress trees, while a huge "Manatee" the nautical "cow", feeds on the vegetation below. You must SEE the St Johns ... and learn to appreciate HUGE springs with their BOILS. JULY 4th
DOWNTOWN JACKSONVILLE, FL
I HAVE SEEN MANY 4TH OF JULY SHOWS . . . NOTHING! HOWEVER COMPARES TO THIS. HERE IS THE SETTING. DOWNTOWN JACKSONVILLE IS SPLIT BY THE ST JOHNS RIVER. THE BRIDGES THAT SPAN THIS SPLIT ARE ALL COLORED. BLUE, WHITE, GREEN, ETC. THE EXPANSE IS CLOSE TO A QUARTER MILE WITH GLEAMING NEW HIGH RISE OFFICE BUILDINGS ON BOTH SIDES. A BARGE IS ANCHORED MID-RIVER ( in 6 knots of current) AND FROM THERE THE FIREWORKS ARE SAFELY FIRED. THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE ARE ON BOTH SIDES OF THE RIVER. I TIED MY BOAT UP IN FRONT OF "JACKSONVILLE LANDING" A FULL 36 HOURS BEFORE THE SHOW.
THE REFLECTIONS EFFECT! AS THE FIREWORKS EXPLODE, THE REFLECTIONS FROM THE WATER AND THE GLASS HI-RISES MIX AND MULTIPLY INTO A MYRIAD OF VISUAL & AUDIO EFFECTS THAT CAN ONLY BE SEEN TO APPRECIATE. ALSO, THE "SOUNDS' ARE AS SPECTACULAR AS IT REVERBERATES OFF THE BUILDINGS, SIDE TO SIDE AND OFF THE WATER, RESULTING IN TRIPLE EFFECTS OF ECHOES. ABSOLUTE GOOSE-BUMP EXPERIENCE. I WAS IN MY LATE 50'S WHEN I FIRST SAW THIS AND I CAN STILL SMELL THE RIVER WATER MIXED WITH THE BREEZE AND THAT SLIGHT & SPECIAL FIREWORKS AROMA. THE REFLECTIONS ON A MOONLIT NIGHT ARE BURNED INTO MY SOUL. I HOPE ALL MY GRANDKIDDO'S GET TO SEE THIS IN YEARS TO COME. SO I ALSO WISH YOU, THE READER TO SEE IT. Sorta getting tired of seeing all these things by myself ... Want to Share!
Shared this trip with my Daughter Brooke ... 30 & a Gorgeous LADY! Fees vary as to choice of custom officers. Tourism for the islands is 90% of income, so you are welcome and seen as INCOME SOURCE. I do not smoke, but carry packs of cigarettes for tipping around my boat. Tips are expected by even persons you did not ask to help you berth. They help, So give a little, what you share with others will increase ,.... what you with-hold will diminish! Water is like bathtub clear, but with big mean critters I never saw in my tub. Great to anchor out and use dinghy for exploring and land trips. We, Daughter Brooke & I, SNUBA dove on the Bimini (Atlantis ) Highway under the sea, no other boats around, weird sounds, and we were IN the Bermuda Triangle. Funniest video I have ever taken was Brooke getting spooked by ????. It is strange to see that road under the water built by ????. FANTASTIC LANE ON BIMINI Most islands have golf carts for exploring ...really fun ...take munchies and cold drinks. Find secluded beaches and yell like kids. Make those MEMORIES! More on Bahamas later. Special Note ... You will love the Island Natives ... they live well and smile Big! Houston, New Orleans, Tampa, Lake Okeechobee, Bahamas, etc. I have removed all those trip stories, but are archived for the new hosted site in development. Bigger and segmented!
First, it's fascinating being able to move your home with you, then when you arrive at a new place, there are boaters you have met in the past. Visiting is just right, you or they can dinghy over to visit, or if you have hit a Marina ... step off your Boat & go explore a new village and with its unique sights & restaurants. Then they go east and you go south, or wherever. You see the sunsets, hear water ever so softly lapping at the hull while boat rocks you to sleep. Sometimes you go to bed at DARK! May be only 8:30 PM. , but feels right. Swimming in crystal clear waters, laying on a sand island only 6' x 6' , seeing fish that you only saw in books and aquariums before you learned to snorkel & dive.
Many species of birds ... all making sounds together duplicate around their mansions ... our views change daily ... theirs do not. Around every bend a new view, a new discovery, living a surprise DAILY!
ride to a grocery store becomes an outing. Simple things can become so much fun. Riding my bicycle is one. One of the best is watching boats try to berth, or anchor ... you feel for them, but laugh, or at least smile, when they screw up, as they laugh at you!
IS THIS REAL ? You, sometimes, actually say out loud to yourself ... I am actually living, day-to-day, on a boat, I'm really doing this thing that I previously thought only drop-outs, Richy Rich, and weirdo's did. you find they were going to do this Boat thing for a year "to get it over with!" "We went ashore, gained weight, were bored to death in 6 weeks, and so we bought another boat ... Now we are where it's Best for us!" There are two LiveAboard Worlds! First, the one I know and enjoy ... responsible people that help others while enjoying a unique lifestyle for a few months or years. Stable, honest, with surprisingly strong backgrounds according to a recent study.
Then there are the other people that live on boats, not for the adventure and quaintness ... but to be almost non-persons. They demand the most, give the least, and leave behind in their visits spoil, bad feelings, and miscellaneous examples of no consideration for anyone or anything ...man or nature.
They are the ones that have given a bad rap for us all, taking advantage of courteous Marina's, etc., and this 10% causes 90% of the problems in Marina's and elsewhere!
MOST Live aboards are above average in their careers, successes, and incomes! Neither the size of the boats, nor the way we dress though makes the difference .. ATTITUDE is the deciding factor. <><><><><><><><><><><><><> on your home block ... with one difference. Every liveaboard I meet eventually says "I wish I had done it sooner." Like all of us with dreams, they postponed theirs for one of the myriad reasons we can all conjure up.
Such as, "when I get enough money" ... (there will never be enough money) ...or... "If I work for just another 5 years, I will have another $ XXX. per month to live on." (Poor Economics, doesn't work. You'll be too old, or inflation will get you ) DO IT NOW! when time has run out you will have to look into your own sunset and sadly ask yourself ... "Why didn't I ?" or even worse comes from being able to do more "Want To's" than Have To's"
Down-size so less things own you. It is Amazing ... within 45 days you won't miss 90% of what you use to have when you finally "Let GO! " Go ?? Do ??? Are you accelerating all the time, no time to slow down?
than just succeed in business! Difference between Success & Successful ... is Ful-fillment! You put yourself into your unreasonable and life threatening existence! I challenge you to start today ... get yourself OUT! It 's Your move so pick your road. Wait ... to save more money or to get a Bigger boat = the (Hi road) or
Now, after such a stout sermon ... part your own waters ... with a BOAT !
go bonkers watching Dolphins jump by my boat. The Dolphins know that Killer is there... for they are also watching him (and me)! Such simple things have become so rewarding.
CLOUDS .... Natural Stress-Busters ?
I honestly think it is impossible to keep "stress" in the forefront Just find just 4 or 5 "faces" or "things" in those big white puffy clouds. A few minutes later you will come aware of not-thinking for past few minutes! "You just don't understand . . . & return to land school find they have JUMPED 2+ grades and matured at twice their peers development.
Myself, FROM CONCEPTION even stated my goal in high school reunion booklet-1973, it took me a total of 16 years to get my Merchant Marine Masters (Captains) license, to attend and graduate from Marine Surveyors school (just to know boats more thoroughly), attending seminars, self-study, and being "Labor" on many varied boats to HONESTLY build my Sea time. Then obtaining my Yacht Brokers License. All that and working full time also! Add thousands of hours boating and sailing, 150,000 miles driving across the U.S. ( Seattle, WA to Miami, FL, etc. ) to literally dozens of marinas, visiting with Liveaboards and boating people, then 2 years of physically ridding myself of all my THINGS 2 story home on a lake; 2 nice automobiles, 3 businesses; 7 garage sales; and even 1 flood
Finally DONE (by myself)!
SO When I have someone aboard, a Lady, a Buddy, or GrandKiddo, I suddenly find "free time" because, you see, TWO together can do more than three alone. It is a togetherness "people" thing! In fact I honestly believe the Ladies enjoy the Liveaboard life even more than the men! They will find another Mate and sail away! Put that into my career and become a multi-millionaire ? SUCCESS is being able to do more WANT TO's and having less HAVE TO's ! big cars, high expenses. I was paying everyone but myself! It is so nice to "lighten up" Getting rid of all those THINGS.
I WISH I HAD DONE IT SOONER !
No matter how wonderful a life ... variety is most paramount, So ... I still enjoy doing what I do best ... As a Sales & Marketing Consultant I still GUARANTEE results and once a year, pick and do a Hands-On Development of a New Product or Light New fires for an old one via Overviews. As a Captain I render a ride "by the book" ... Safe & Fun ! I deliver yachts, drive party boats, do sea trials on 30 - 90 foot yachts ... the Other possible Catastrophe is Booze & In-Attention "at the Helm" !
I am one of the oldest Licensed Yacht Brokers in the USA ! I use to hand out OCBC (Oklahoma City Boat Club) cards to the single Ladies that I had printed on the back saying:
Free ticket for:
The O.C.B.C. The Oklahoma City Boat Club is a Unique and Wonderful yacht club built by tens of thousands of member-man-hours over 60+ years. It is located in the Heart of NW Oklahoma City on Lake Hefner. A small Lake with Heavy winds from heaven and flat water too. I have found FEW Yacht clubs in the USA, from Washington to Florida and all between, that have all the facilities of the OCBC, and I treasure my 25 years as a member.
TODAY So NOW I am living the best of my Todays & Tomorrows. Winds & Breezes, and FRIENDS on the WATER !
DAY-TO-DAY fixing, restaurant meals, catching up on movies . Oft-times I anchor out in the beautiful desolate boondocks, or anchor within mile or less of civilization and motor in my Dingy to Dinner or to shop, etc. I also use My Masters License to Deliver vessels, drive Charter boats, Survey rides, owners boats and in general enjoy being a Captain on many vessels, Sail or Power. I will answer you as soon as I get to a phone link may take a day or week ? Emergency calls I handle thru my
